What does 1/20 14K gold filled mean?

The 1/20 designation refers to weight, not the physical thickness of the gold layer. It means that the mechanically bonded 14K gold alloy accounts for at least 1/20, or 5%, of the item’s total metal weight. The remaining portion is a base-metal core, usually brass.

This means the product contains 5% 14K gold alloy by weight, not 5% pure gold.
